Three Dancers from Powder (2000)
Robert Heindel American Painter (1938 - 2005) Oil on Board 33 inches (w) x 38 inches (h) Heindel based himself in Birmingham for a short period in 1998 in order to watch the rehearsals of David Bintley's 'The Protecting Veil'. At the same time Birmingham Royal Ballet were preparing to permiere a new Stanton Welch piece entitled 'Powder'. Heindel clearly liked what he saw, 'Powder' appeared in a number of subsequent works. This 2000 painting presents somewhat a conundrum; the two animated dancers are certainly taken from the ballet, distintive with their flowing voile. The arched figure to the right of the work seems to be from another source altogether and clearly not in constume. Heindel would sometimes combine figures in this way in order to serve his purposes. The levity and lightness of the couple in stark contrast to the focus of the dark character.
